Yummy London!

When I was a sock designer in the eighties I used to travel to London every couple of weeks, but since the new millennium I have only been a handful of times for fleeting visits. That's why I was very keen to seek out the changes in cuisine on a recent visit. I found a huge variety of epicurean delights that will suit all budgets and as my friend and I were travelling with our kids it made the experience more challenging.

Afternoon Tea is a quintessentially English experience and The Arch Hotel on Great Cumberland Place is a real find for a very different treat.

The contemporary Afternoon Tea offers fresh warm cinnamon and sugar doughnuts filled with apple jam in the place of scones.
The Arch Hotel
Savoury delights include Mini Beef Burgers with Onion Marmalade in Brioche Buns; Smoked Chicken, Chilli, Avocado and Mango Tortillas, Mini handmade Scotch Eggs with Piccalilli; and Chicken Satay served with a Peanut dipping Sauce and Sesame Seeds.
This fruity cocktail was an exotic start to the Afternoon Tea
Sweet treats include homemade Macarons; exquisite Mini Coffee Éclairs; and a Lemon and Mango Rice Pudding with Toasted Coconut. Strawberry and Pistachio Tarts and Mini Raspberry Victoria Sponges will provide a nod to the traditional British Afternoon Tea.
Priced at £29 and £38 with Champagne, the Afternoon Tea can be enjoyed in the hotel’s stunning Martini Library, stylish restaurant, or chic Salon de Champagne lounge.
This was afternoon Tea with a difference. The kids adored the mini fish and chips and mini burgers while the adults demolished the chicken on a stick. This charming hotel is somewhere we all would like to return to.

My daughter couldn't wait to explore Borough Market

Since the development of the South bank of the river Thames there is always somewhere yummy to eat. Southwark is home to the Tate Modern and the new Globe Theatre and although I had not been I had heard about the development. But I didn't realise that Southwark is home to an exciting food Market. The aromas from the stalls are filled with so much choice and variety that there is something for everyone's taste. From the hog on the spit, Pad Thai in a box or Oysters for £5 my eyes and senses were reeling. Under the gaze of the Shard (the tallest building in the EU) this area is also home to The Leaky Cauldron and a must for Harry Potter fans! Start your Muggle Tour here!

Radio Rooftop at ME London

Brunch is a great way to spend a lazy Saturday or Sunday and I think I found the perfect spot in London. The Radio Rooftop restaurant has probably the best view of all of London's major sights in the perfect location on the Strand. At the top of the uber trendy ME hotel it is a hive of activity with a menu that will satisfy all tastes - including picky kids!
Check out the views on the website if you don't believe me. Radio Rooftop

Kids on Top

Happy Mums for Saturday Brunch at Radio Rooftop

With super fast Wifi the kids were so busy that my friend and I could mull over a bottle of Prosecco for three hours under the London sunshine. French toast with berries satisfied the kids while I enjoyed crab omelette, sweet corn fritters and my friend, Wendy went for the Eggs Benedict. Yet again we found a true delight and if I return without the kids I will be paying this bar a visit in the evening too!
The delicious Caxton Grille at the St Ermins Hotel

If you are looking for a truly special meal in London, then a few steps across the road from New Scotland Yard is the beautiful St Ermins Hotel and home to The Caxton Grille. Masterchef Adam Handling made this dining experience one of the best meals I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. I did wonder how the kids were going to like such exotic cuisine but I needn't have worried...after their delicious mains our waiter produced a bowl of homemade candy floss to impress the girls and it most certainly did!
The Kids choclate Brownie with Candyfloss in Background

My main course Wagyu Burger

My mouth still waters every time I think of my Wagyu Burger and I didn't think that the meal could get any better...until desert came out that is! A feast for the eyes and senses is the only way to describe my popcorn, nougat, caramel and burnt orange ice-cream pudding.
Followed by home made lollipops and petit fours I cannot remember a better meal.
Adam Handling is a genius. Check out the website for the Caxton Grille here.
If you are travelling on a tight budget then you can still find plenty of good places to eat. I was pleasantly surprised to find dinner for two adults and two kids for £50 including a half carafe of Wine on Victoria Street. The Colosseo is a warm friendly place with freshly made pizzas and pasta dishes - well worth checking out for a lovely family experience. Click here colosseo restaurant to see more information.Overall our dining experience in London was mouthwatering with wonderful choice to please all the family, young and old.

Celebrity Cruises in Dublin

Me with Edward Smith from Suburbia on line

I spent the most lovely day on Sunday with the gorgeous Edward Smith of suburbiaonline on board the Solstice class ship Silhouette. It was a great way to put in a sunny afternoon with sublime views of my home town from a perspective that I have never seen before.
The pool on board Silhouette
We sampled the wonderful saunas and new Persian Gardens now available to Aqua class passengers. Then we dined in the Tuscan Grille where I enjoyed the best Tiramisu ever - no wonder it is aptly named a 'pick me up' with the smouldering aroma of Italian liquors.
The visit brought back happy memories of my time spent on board the Solstice class ship, Reflection, last year. I will blog about very soon...watch this space!

Athlone for teens and tweens

The summer holidays can feel long when you have a teen and a tween shuffling around the house but living in Ireland we often forget that there is plenty to do on our doorstep. I let my son and daughter bring a friend each on a mini staycation to Athlone. Being in the middle of the country Athlone is close to everywhere and it has a vibrant history and story to tell.

Our staycation started at the Radisson Blu hotel which sits in the middle of the town overlooking the River Shannon and a great location to park up the car. My 11 year old daughter and her friend were excited by our huge family room and unpacked quickly leaving their teddies on the giant bed for later. My teenage son was relieved that he and his pal had the privacy of an adjoining room and I was pleased that they were close by for me to keep an eye on them. With two ensuites, plenty of TVs and free wifi I knew they would be happy at night.

We took a Viking Tour from outside Athlone Castle on a replica Viking ship. Our captain and navigator gave a running commentary which was informative and enjoyable with stories of folklore and natural history. It proved great fun for all ages and an interesting 45 minute trip along the river to Hodson Bay. At €10 per adult and €5 for kids it was good value too.

We were left off on the jetty at Hodson Bay and home to Baysports Boat and Water Sports Centre. This is Ireland's largest inflatable waterpark and will rival any found on the continent. There was plenty to entice my teens and tweens who were given wet suits on arrival and after debriefing were brought out to the floating pontoon by rib.

The hour spent on the slides, trampolines and other delights slipped by but even after all that exertion they wanted to try kayaking. The waterpark is excellent value at €10 per hour for children up to 14 years old.

We caught the Viking ship back to the town after two hours but the kids still had energy for a swim in the pool at the Radisson Blu. While they are bathing I sat on the open decked bar and sipped a glass of wine. The hotel serves BBQ lunch on sunny days and watching the boats float up and down the river was a wonderful way to spend the run up to dinner.

There are lots of good eateries in Athlone and it is worth checking out the website www.athlone.ie to see a selection. We dined in the Radisson Blu Elemtentals Bistro. It offers a broad menu - we ate duck, steak and chicken and each meal was beautifully presented, only the boys had room for dessert however as portions were generous.

After a great night's sleep we got up to enjoy a hearty breakfast buffet. I pulled rank and insisted we put a little culture into our staycation. Athlone Castle is a stone's throw from the hotel and tells about the development of the town from Bronze Age settlers to the twentieth century and of course the famous Siege in 1691. In the market square St Pauls' church is home to six magnificent Harry Clarke windows which really are worth a view.

We packed up our luggage a little too quickly and when we get home discovered to my daughter's horror that she had left her favourite teddy in our hotel room. But the housekeeping at the Radisson Blu proved super efficient and told us they keep records of all lost property. They guaranteed to post teddy to us immediately FOC which was a huge relief and great service. I don't think teddy wanted to leave Athlone and neither did the kids.

Factfile
A family room at the Radisson Blu Athlone for 2 adults and 2 children starts from €139 overnight with breakfast. http://www.radissonblu.ie/hotel-athlone

Kissimee Quick!

Heading to Florida this summer, then don’t forget to Experience Kissimmee

Visitors flock to Kissimmee and the surrounding areas to visit world famous theme parks and lose themselves in the fantasy for a time. But Kissimmee also has some truly unique opportunities for fun and adventure so discover the variety of attractions and activities on offer.
If high flying adventure is on your bucket list, then head on over to Warbird Adventures, where you can take the controls of an authentic WWII fighter plane. Explore the great outdoors in a canoe or in an airboat and test the limits of your adventurous spirit.

Warbird Adventures: This is the real thing. Come fly like the aces of yesteryear in some of the most significant military aircraft in history and prepare yourself for the experience of a life-time ! Whether you want a thrilling aerobatic adventure or a smooth straight-and-level flight, the experience will never be forgotten. You take the controls in the front seat for your Discovery flight and one of our very experienced instructors will teach you everything you want to learn about flying these pieces of history. It’s a 100% hands on experience.

Airboat Rides: There’s nothing like the wind-in-your-hair adventure of “flying” across the water in an airboat. Visitors from around the world travel to Kissimmee to climb aboard and travel at speeds of up to 40 mph to get to the best spots for alligator and bird watching (Side note: Did you know Osceola County is home to the largest number of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 states?). A number of airboat operators launch out of area lakes – including Boggy Creek Airboats, Marsh Landing Adventures, Spirit of the Swamp Airboat Rides and Wild Florida Airboats and Wildlife Park.

Ziplining: The first step is the hardest when you’re strapped into the zipline harness and you’re contemplating stepping off the platform to embark on a long zip ride to the other side. But the feeling when you successfully land on the other side is indescribable. Kissimmee is home to some of the best zipline and obstacle course attractions in the country, including a zipline rollercoaster at Forever Florida Ziplines and Adventures in the Wild. A new attraction guaranteed to test your agility and stamina is Orlando Tree Trek Adventure Park, offering an elevated obstacle course that includes ziplining, suspended bridges, Tarzan swings and much more at heights of 10 to 60 feet above the ground! One of Florida’s original roadside attractions also has the Screamin’ Gator Zip Line. You won’t be able to resist dazzling your friends and family with stories of ziplining over a marsh with hundreds of alligators and over jumping crocodiles.

The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek: Some of Florida’s most beautiful scenery can be found in Kissimmee, particularly along Shingle Creek, which are the headwaters of the Florida Everglades.  Guests can climb into a canoe or kayak – single or tandem – and take a journey under a cypress-tree lined creek. The attraction truly is an oasis nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of the theme parks.

I Love New York and EVERYONE else can too!

New York has to be one of my favourite cities. I love it so much that I set my second novel there - Three Nights in New York. I always seem to stay for three nights too which is the perfect time to see lots and leave loads more for the next time!

Below is information for people with disability who need to know in advance suitable places to visit.

NYC & COMPANY HIGHLIGHTS ACCESSIBLE
NEW YORK CITY ATTRACTIONS AND EVENTS

—All Five Boroughs Offer Accessible Attractions and Events for People with Disabilities—

New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organisation, is highlighting New York City as an accessible and inclusive destination featuring attractions and events not to be missed in all five boroughs.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) this month, the City hosted its first annual Disability Pride NYC Parade on 12th July, bringing together people of all abilities to celebrate the accomplishments of the community. The ADA Legacy Tour, a national year-long tour that raises awareness of and excitement about the anniversary, then visited all five boroughs.

Today, NYC & Company is hosting a special NYC & Company Talks: ADA—Beyond Compliance to Service meeting at The Roosevelt Hotel. This first-ever symposium aims to further educate the City’s hospitality businesses to focus on creating a more accessible and welcoming social environment in New York City. Victor Calise, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, and Peter Slatin, founder and president of The Slatin Group, are guest speakers at the event.

“This year we designate July NYC Disability Pride Month in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act – one of the most important civil rights laws in the history of this nation,” said Mayor de Blasio. “I am proud to welcome visitors with disabilities to this city, which is home to so many historical and cultural institutions, as well as recreational activities, that are committed to accessibility, equality and inclusivity for all.”

“New York City’s tourism industry has been at the forefront of making improvements to ensure that the City’s attractions are easily accessible to all visitors,” said Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company. “The City should be enjoyable and accessible to everyone drawn to its vitality, energy, culture and cuisine.”

Whether you’re a visitor or local resident, the City’s newest attractions are all accessible for patrons with disabilities:

·         The Whitney Museum of American Art, which recently reopened in its new Meatpacking District location, offers verbal description and touch tours for people who are blind or have low vision, tours in American Sign Language for the deaf or hard of hearing and family access programs for children on the autism spectrum.
·         One World Observatory is fully ADA compliant, and all exhibitions and restrooms are fully accessible with elevators to every floor of the observatory.
·         With its new Peopling of America Center, guests visiting the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration can discover tactile models of the island and borrow wheelchairs and assisted-listening devices. Braille brochures and audio description tours are also available.

For the entertainment-enthused visitor wishing to experience some of the City’s top sports teams and the best of Broadway, there are many options:

·         Barclays Center in Brooklyn, home to the Brooklyn Nets and most recently the New York Islanders, offers guests with disabilities assisted-listening devices, elevators, induction loop locations, interpreting services and wheelchair and companion seating.
·         The Staten Island Yankees, a minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees, also have wheelchair-accessible seats at the top of the seating bowl, as well as along the box and reserve sections.
·         Many of New York’s beloved Broadway shows, such as The Lion King and Wicked, are part of theBroadway Accessibility Initiative, which provides services including I-Caption devices for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons and D-Scriptive devices for blind and low-vision patrons.

At some of New York City’s classic attractions, cultural organisations and parks, guests can enjoy their experience with easy access including:

·         Special programming and devices for patrons with limited mobility, sight and hearing impairment, dementia, autism and developmental and learning disabilities at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art
·         Free wheelchair rentals and accessible exhibits at The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the New York Hall of Science in Queens
·         A unique tour program on Saturday mornings at the American Museum of Natural History, as well as specially trained museum guides who host monthly tours of specific exhibitions and engage with participants through extensive verbal descriptions and touchable objects
·         Full access to Coney Island’s New York Aquarium exhibits, with guides to let visitors know of low-light areas, touch exhibits and assistive listening
·         Lowered viewing walls, binoculars and ramps at the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock. Visitors are also allowed to bring service dogs into all public areas at both attractions
·         Adaptive Hubs at NYC parks with fully accessible recreation centres, basketball courts, beaches, pools, sports fields and more, as well as adaptive sport and recreational activities throughout July

When travelling around the City’s five boroughs, visitors can be informed of accessible travel options and be matched with a volunteer greeter from Big Apple Greeter. When the 7 Subway Line Extension opens later this summer, riders with disabilities will be able to easily access the train platform with the use of two inclined elevators. The MTA also offers wheelchair accessibility on both local and express buses.
